When Football Builds Bridges: Sports for Peace in Al-Qaryatayn
When Football Builds Bridges
Sports for Peace in Al-Qaryatayn
How a football tournament helped rebuild trust and strengthen social cohesion.
🟦 Challenge
Years of conflict left Al-Qaryatayn with more than physical destruction. As families returned from different places and experiences, rebuilding trust became one of the community’s greatest challenges. Social divisions and years of separation had created barriers between different groups, making opportunities for positive interaction increasingly important.
Creating safe spaces where people could meet, interact, and cooperate became an essential step toward rebuilding community relationships.
🟩 Our Response
Believing that sport can unite where conflict has divided, Manzoul e.V. organized the Sports for Peace Football Tournament at Al-Qaryatayn Municipal Stadium.
The tournament brought together participants from diverse backgrounds, including returnees from different regions, residents who had remained in the city throughout the conflict, members of the Christian community, students, teachers, local sports clubs, and representatives of public institutions.
For many participants, it was the first opportunity in years to meet on equal ground—not as members of different groups, but simply as teammates, competitors, and neighbours.
The impact of the tournament extended beyond the football field. Inspired by the positive atmosphere, local youth volunteers launched a community initiative to clean and prepare the municipal stadium for the final match. This spontaneous action reflected a renewed sense of ownership, civic responsibility, and the willingness of community members to work together toward a common goal.
